Younger Australia Day attendees are in for a treat on Saturday, January 26, with the much loved Hi-5 taking to the stage to dance and sing their hearts out. Lachie and Courtney, two members of the group, gave FOCUS an insight into what it’s like being a member of a group that has helped to shape the childhoods of so many Australians.
Q: What can attendees of The Hills Australia Day celebrations expect from your upcoming performance?
Lachie: I am so excited to be performing on Australia Day! We have lots of games, music and love to share with all the kids of all different cultural backgrounds, which to me is what Australia is all about.
Courtney: They can expect a lot of colour, love and magical fun! Summer is here and that means a lot of fun adventures and playing for me and my Hi-5 Family. There will be loads of singing and dancing in our show and we can’t wait to meet everyone.
Q: What’s been your most memorable performance so far?
L: Every performance is very different as sometimes we have audiences of tens of thousands, like at the Carols on Christmas Eve, and other times just a few kids like when we visit the Children’s Hospitals. Each time I look out and see smiling faces, it creates a special memory for me.
C: For me every performance is as memorable as the next. No matter where we go on stage, each show ends up being funny and memorable in a different way from the last. That’s the best part about being on stage with such energetic, entertaining people! I’d have to say that in addition to that, whenever the audience are dancing and playing with us is the most amazing part of any live performance.
Q: How does it feel knowing that so many kids look up to you?
L: My philosophy on life is to be the best version of myself that I can be. That means being fit and healthy, having a positive attitude, treating everyone the way I would like to be treated and making the most of every day. To be in a position where I am able to encourage the next generation to have this same outlook is super exciting and an absolute honour.
C: I feel so honoured to be looked up to by today’s youngsters and to get to share such amazing themes of fun and love through learning. It’s the most humbling experience someone my age could ever journey on. Especially to be able to do this on an international level is just incredible. My hope is to be the big ‘sister’ that every child deserves. Someone they love to play and learn with and someone who they feel encouraged by to never stop chasing their dreams.
Q: Is it daunting filling the big boots left by the previous members of Hi-5?
L: I grew up watching Hi-5 and was a massive fan! So I can definitely say it is surreal being a cast member but we aren’t really trying to fill anyone’s boots. The beauty of Hi5 is every past and current member of Hi aren’t playing a role, we are simply being ourselves and connecting with and teaching kids through our love of music and dance in our own unique ways.
C: For me, whilst every cast that Hi-5 has had have been absolutely amazing, I’ve never felt daunted by stepping into this role. With my four best friends by my side, I only feel more encouraged that just being myself and sharing the love in my heart that I have for the children… is good enough! I know that we as a group have so much to offer and we are so excited to share it all with the people we get to meet along this journey in our own new, fresh, fun, and unique way!!
Q: What’s next?
L: 2018 looks like it is going to be an exciting one! We have tours in countries Hi-5 hasn’t visited before, we are filming about 50 new episodes of our TV series, and we have plans for an Australian tour. Basically lots of singing and dancing with our awesome audiences!
C: So much! Of course there are some appearances next year at the Crown Plaza in the Hunter Valley and the Fairmont Resort in the Blue Mountains and then of course our performance on Australia Day in Bella Vista and many more performances and events that you can keep updated with on our Facebook page at Hi-5 World! Though I can tell you this much… there are a lot of exciting things coming in 2018 for HI-5 and we just can’t wait.
