2018 is the year of the dog! Check out this handy guide to keeping man’s best friend safe and healthy in The Hills Shire.
The Hills Shire has many areas where your furry friends can roam free. The following reserves have designated offleash or free run areas where dogs are allowed off leash with supervision:
- Balcombe Heights Reserve
- Castle Hill Showground
- Coolong Reserve
- Crestwood Reserve
- Dewhurst Avenue Reserve
REGISTER YOUR DOG
All dogs in NSW must be registered by six months of age unless they are exempt. The one off registration fee covers the dog for its whole lifetime and there’s a discounted rate for desexed dogs.
Did you know that all dogs in NSW must be microchipped by 12 weeks of age or before being sold or given away, whichever comes first.
DOG SAFETY PROGRAM
Our Dog Safety Program helps to educate children and families about maintaining safe child-dog relationships and allows children to be better prepared when dealing with dogs outside the home. The program is available to all primary schools in The Hills Shire.
DESEX YOUR DOG
Dog owners are encouraged to have their pets desexed before registering them as discounted fees apply. Dogs must be desexed by 6 months of age to receive the discounted lifetime registration fee.
Dog owners have a responsibility to keep their dog contained inside their property. It is against the law for dogs to wander the streets as they can cause car accidents, damage to property and intimidate the public. If you find a stray dog, you have the responsibility to return it to its owner, contact Council or take it to an animal holding facility such as a vet.
FRIENDS OF HAWKESBURY COMPANION ANIMAL SHELTER
Dogs that cannot be reunited with their owners or are not wanted by them are kept at the Friends of Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter. Save the life of a puppy or dog today by choosing to buy your next pet from the shelter.
