A TOWN DIVIDED
Steeped in rich history, the picturesque town of Wisemans Ferry is divided between four councils – Hornsby Shire, The City of Hawkesbury, The Central Coast Council and, of course, our very own Hills Shire Council.
The town derives its name from Solomon Wiseman, a convict who was deported to Australia for stealing. Later pardoned, Wiseman obtained land along the Hawkesbury River where he established an inn and operated the first Wisemans ferry service.
Wisemans Ferry is one of the Shire’s hidden gems with cafes, restaurants, art gallery, motel, golf course, corner store, pub and other services supporting not only locals loving an ‘off the grid’ lifestyle but also day trippers, overnight visitors, anglers and water-sports lovers including the water ski lodges that line the Hawkesbury.
REJUVENATED OPEN SPACE
Even though Wisemans Ferry is the site of the oldest ferry crossing in Australia, not everything in the town is old.
Council has recently given the much-loved Wisemans Ferry Park a facelift with the addition of new play equipment including basket swings and an upgraded bike track. A nature play area with balance beams, stepping stones and a sandstone rock with a poem about Wisemans has been added. And the makeover isn’t over yet with two new barbeques and more play equipment, including a flying fox and climbing ropes, to be installed before the end of the year.
As well, two new sandstone rock walls have been installed to provide stability and access to the river’s edge while other sections of collapsing river bank were filled with soil and stabilised with sandstone boulders and new plants.
PACK A PICNIC
This family friendly park is the perfect place for a picnic lunch, with afternoons spent lazing on the banks of the Hawkesbury River, and is sure to become even more popular once the refurbishments are complete.
If you prefer more of a birds-eye view, head up a bit higher to Hawkins Lookout – which has also undergone a recent refurbishment – where you can find spectacular views of the river and its surrounds.
Jam-packed with fascinating colonial heritage and stunning landscapes, there’s something for everyone at Wisemans Ferry.
